My therapeutic style is warm, interactive, and empathetic.
My approach to therapy is individualized based on the needs of each unique client. I provide insight-oriented therapy with the belief that you, the client, are the expert on your life and that my role is to provide guidance and input on your journey.
While my approach is influenced by psychodynamic theory, I also employ cognitive-behavioral and emotion-focused interventions, depending on the needs of the client.I also think it is important to gain insight into family dynamics and to understand how the past continues to influence thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in the present.
My therapeutic style is warm, interactive, and empathetic. You can expect to be treated with care and respect. You can count on authenticity, a kind appreciation of where you have been, an objective and non-judgmental stance, and some gentle humor thrown in when appropriate. My hope is that therapy is a place for you to slow down, receive support and guidance, and better understand your experiences.
Psychotherapy outcome studies stress one important point. Clients and therapists must be a good fit for a positive result. Be assured that our first meeting is a trial run. If you are comfortable and want to move forward, then we will consider the meeting our first session. If you are not comfortable, I will work with you to find an alternative.
Assessment
A comprehensive assessment by a trained professional can be helpful in understanding and addressing the difficulties or struggles that an individual may be experiencing. Furthermore, assessments offer a means for developing a deeper understanding of why someone is behaving or feeling the way they are, so that appropriate treatments can be structured and implemented. I currently offer Cognitive/Psychoeducational assessments and Psychological/Personality assessments.
The Assessment Process
The assessment typically begins with scheduling an initial interview to help clarify referral questions and to gather important background information. Once this information has been gathered, the psychological and/or cognitive tests are administered over a few sessions. The measures used are tailored to each individual and, if appropriate, additional information will be gathered from relevant collateral sources. The results are then scored and interpreted. A comprehensive report is created which includes information that specifically addresses the referral question, provides general information about functioning, and specifies recommendations for treatment. A feedback session is then held to share the results and answer any remaining questions.
In summary, an assessment typically includes the following:
Clinical Interview
Battery of cognitive, behavioral and/or personality testing
Interviews and diagnostic measures for parents, teachers, and/or significant others
Scoring and interpretation of test results
Comprehensive report with diagnoses and treatment recommendations
Feedback session to discuss results
